- [S1553] Dayton Kelley, Handbook of Waco and McLennan County, Texas, Claiborne Varner was born on November 10, 1824 in Louisiana. He moved to Waco as a young man and purchased a large plantation about five miles north of Waco on the Brazos River. By occupation a farmer, he engaged in the cattle and agricultural business. A member of the comission which selected Waco as the county seat of McLennan County, he served as a county commissioner from 1850 to 1861. He was one of the original members of the Waco Masonic Lodge, then called Bosque Lodge, and was its first Master. in 1870 he moved to Weatherford and associated with his brother-in-law, J. W. Sheek, in the cattle business.
His first wife was Cynthia Ann Jones. After her death, he married Susannah J. Sheek in 1851. He was the father of nine children. Varner died at Weatherford on August 10, 1878. - [S327] 30 Sep 1850, United States Federal Census, [database on-line], Provo, Utah County, Utah, Roll: M432_913, P10.
