     James Caruthers was born circa 1770.1 He was the son of William Caruthers.2 He married Elizabeth Saunders circa 1785.1 A contract for the marriage of James Caruthers and Elizabeth Saunders was signed on 12 May 1785 at Township of Deptford, Gloucester County, New Jersey.3 He witnessed the marriage of Jean Sutter and Marie Victoire Cormier on 1 April 1819 at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church, St. Martinville, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana.4
