Varner was born on 10 November 1824 at Alabama.2,3,4 He was the son of John Varner and Elizabeth McKnight.2 He married Cynthia Ann Jones circa 1845.3 He was employed as a County Commissioner between 1850 and 1861 at McLennan County, Texas.5 Claiborne served as a County Commissioner of McLennan County, Texas from its organization in 1850 until 1861.6 He and his wife Cynthia Ann Jones appeared on the census of 30 September 1850 at Milam County, Texas.3 He married Susannah Jane Sheek, daughter of Adam Sheek and Jamima Sparks, on 9 October 1851 at Cherokee County, Texas.1,7 He and his wife Susannah Jane Varner appeared on the census of 8 June 1860 at Waco, McLennan County, Texas.7 He was employed as a farmer with real estate worth $3,000 and a personal estate of $12,065 on 8 June 1860 at McLennan County, Texas.7 He and his wife Susannah Jane Sheek appeared on the census of 28 August 1870 at West of the Brazos River, Waco, McLennan County, Texas.8 He was employed as a farmer on 28 August 1870 at West of the Brazos River, Waco, McLennan County, Texas.8 He died on 10 August 1878 at Parker County, Texas, at age 53 years and 9 months.4 He was buried at City Greenwood Cemetery, Weatherford, Parker County, Texas.4,9

  5. [S1553] Dayton Kelley, Handbook of Waco and McLennan County, Texas, Claiborne Varner was born on November 10, 1824 in Louisiana. He moved to Waco as a young man and purchased a large plantation about five miles north of Waco on the Brazos River. By occupation a farmer, he engaged in the cattle and agricultural business. A member of the comission which selected Waco as the county seat of McLennan County, he served as a county commissioner from 1850 to 1861. He was one of the original members of the Waco Masonic Lodge, then called Bosque Lodge, and was its first Master. in 1870 he moved to Weatherford and associated with his brother-in-law, J. W. Sheek, in the cattle business.
    His first wife was Cynthia Ann Jones. After her death, he married Susannah J. Sheek in 1851. He was the father of nine children. Varner died at Weatherford on August 10, 1878.
