William Peery1

     William Peery was born in 1743 at Somerset County, Maryland.2,3,4 He was the son of James Peery and Mary Reeves.1 As of circa 1764, William Peery lived at Lewes, Sussex County, Delaware.3 He was active in the practice of law from about 1764 until his death. He was also very active "in politics, in his church, and was the owner of a great amount of real estate and a money lender with real estate security."5 He married Mary Hood circa 1767.6 He was appointed by the freeholders of Sussex County to a "Boston ReliefCommittee" on 23 July 1774 at Sussex County, Delaware.6 This committee consisted of William Peery, Rev. Nathaniel Wilson, John Rodney, and David Hall, who later became a Colonel and Governor.7 He began military service circa March 1776 at Lewes, Sussex County, Delaware, when he raised a company for service in the War of Independence from England.8 On 23 April 1777, Captain William Peery was listed on the Company Roll as the commander.8 As of 30 June 1782, William Peery was also known as Major William Peery.9 He was a member of the Second Continental Congress in 1785-6 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.10 He became a widower upon the death of his wife, Mary Peery, on 11 May 1787 at Cool Spring, Sussex County, Delaware.11,6 He married Margaret Wilson, daughter of Matthew Wilson and Elizabeth Craighead, circa 1789.6,4 He died on 14 December 1800 at Cool Spring, Sussex County, Delaware, at age 57 years.2,12,4 He was buried at Cool Spring Presbyterian Church, Cool Spring, Sussex County, Delaware.2,10,4 He left a will in 1800.1
